I haven’t blogged in a while because I was recently laid off. Being laid off in the industry in Las Vegas means something very different than it does elsewhere or in other industries. Yes, like other laid off people, I had to sign a paper recognizing my new status of being laid off. Unlike these other people though, I didn’t take a week long vacation before hitting the streets to find a new job. I am not actually unemployed. I am simply scheduled to work whatever shifts are leftover and not covered by servers who have more seniority than me. This means I work whatever shifts are available. Instead of working the awesome night shifts that I am accustomed to, I have been working a combination of the most boring and mundane day shifts.

Not a lot happens during the day. People who eat at normal times and function during daytime hours are pretty fucking boring.

- I only encounter one drunk person per day and they NEVER throw up.
- Even when someone is rude, they don’t make a scene. In fact, they usually revert back to being pleasant once they eat.
- Most people say please and thank you.
- Tips still vary according to nationality and race but usually everyone in your station has the same tipping practices (either all good or all bad tips). This makes it hard to single one table out.
- Everything/Everyone moves slowly – the kitchen, the guests, the line, my co-workers, even time.

For me, working day shift feels like getting a face transplant might. Yeah, you no longer see the teeth impressions from that crazy shark attack but you don’t really see yourself either.

It’s hard to find something to blog about during day shift but don’t worry I’ll be vigilant.
